Der alleinerziehende Vater John James zieht nach einer schmerzvollen Scheidung mit seinen zwei Kindern auf eine abgelegene Farm aufs Land. Seine pubertierende Tochter Louisa kann sich mit der langweiligen Umgebung überhaupt nicht anfreunden, bis sie beim Spielen am Waldrand seltsam geformte Hügel entdeckt. Von da an benimmt sie sich immer seltsamer und macht sogar ihrem kleinen Bruder Sam angst. Als John der Sache nachgeht wird ihm schnell klar, dass sie nicht alleine auf dem Anwesen leben. Unter den Hügeln scheint irgendetwas Unheilvolles zu schlummern. Schon bald muss John erkennen, dass seine Tochter nicht mehr dieselbe ist, und dass er alles tun muss, um seine Familie vor dem Tod zu retten.
